20TH NEW LENOX OPEN

The New Lenox Open presented by Dellwood Disc Golf, where the past meets the present. At least that's what it felt like.

It has been years, too many years since an event was hosted here. I don’t know the last time an event was hosted here, but I do know 1989 was close to it. At that time some of the discs that were just being released to the market included Innova’s Shark, Roc, Aviar and Cobra. High-speed drivers and fairway discs just weren’t on the market yet.

You can get a feel for the year by reading the 1989 Disc Golf World news at the button below.

The first shot out of the car for me was Kevin Daly. He showed me his second place trophy from the New Lenox Open in 1989 (Novice), and his second place trophy from today (MA60).

It takes a community to bring these events together. I like to think that the tournament staff realizes what kind of an impact they have on all of us by hosting these events.

It's hard to see that the day of when you are going through the motions when the sun is beating down on you, you're sweating, and the flies are biting. You’re so sundrunk and slap happy at the end of the day. But the burn out becomes so real the day after the tournament.

But the impact this has on all of us. To come together, to compete, to laugh, and see old and new friends. That's what this is about. We share this commonality with a great love for the wind, and how it shapes our lives.

These tournaments become collections of memories, and that’s what we are really here for. The photos below were edited to look and feel like we these moments were captured in an era when this event was last held.
