LAKE ARVESTA DISC GOLF COURSE
Lake Arvesta Farms in South Haven, Michigan, has been getting so much great word-of-mouth as a destination course. I have honestly been dreaming of coming here for a few years now to find out what the hype is all about.
The Unstable Discourse Podcast just released their latest episode featuring course designer Jim Schultz. I highly recommend you give it a listen to learn more about the course and all the work behind it.
Course Details
Lake Arvesta actually has 4 playable courses here. The three most noticeable courses include: yellow (short 5,467 ft.), white (Pro 8,952 ft.) and blue (Elite 11,044 feet). All of these course follow the same tract of land - if you play yellow, you will also pass the white and blue baskets along the way.
The fourth course is known as the “short-cut” this course utilizes the same layout, but you will skip the water holes. It is more beginer-friendly.
Hole 1
They really go big on hole 1 here with the tee on top of the large mound (you will walk by a mini golf course on your walk up the hill to get here). I know I saw pictures of this hole before coming here, but once you are here that hill feels way higher in person.
The photo below shows the yellow basket just to the left of the dock below. The white and blue baskets are just off camera, directly across the lake to the right.
We played the yellow course, which is the shortest layout (and SHARA Disc Golf Course the same day).
Just because this is the short layout, it does not mean that it wasn’t challenging! For me personally, I have been connecting with the game more lately and getting out to play more. The yellow course was perfect for where I am at mentally right now. I do what to come back and play the white layout though, because there are more true par 4’s and par 5’s.
The photo below is the drop zone for the white and blue layouts if you go OB in the water. I thought it was an interesting perspective looking back at the mound. The people that you see in between the mini silo and red tree are standing on the tee.
There are great directional signs throughout the course guiding you towards the tee or baskets on the longer holes. So much detail went into the course assets here. The tee signs are so specific with distance, and the tee pads are incredible. The round tee pads give you more flexibility with which route you want to take, unlike the more standard rectangle tees.
If you listen to the Unstable Discourse podcast episode, Jim Schultz gets into the detail of design with the teepads and the material that was used, porous pave I believe. Just standing on the tee pad you notice that it feels like rubber almost, but its nice and gripy (not too gripy), and when they get wet the water drains through them!
Lake Arvesta Farms is a massive, massive property with 188 acres. I would love to come out here at the peak of summer because they have so much to do including a water park, pickle ball, mini golf, and a full restaurant/bar and so much more. Its an adventure just being here.
Once you are here, you will probably want to stay here, but downtown South Haven and SHARA Disc Golf course are also nearby. There is so much to do all around. I highly, highly recommend adding Lake Arvesta and South Haven, Michigan to your disc golf bucket list.
