THE PIONEER WOMAN MERCANTILE IN PAWHUSKA OKLAHOMA
If you have never heard of The Pioneer Woman, she is kind of a big deal. Her actual name is Ree Drummond, originally from Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She was swept off her feet and married a cowboy who came from a family of ranchers who own 433,000 acres of land in Osage County.
After settling for a country life she started a little food blog called The Pioneer Woman. It blossomed from there, and led to her own television show on the Food Network and from that she branched out, she has now had her own line of merchandise at Walmart (for over a decade), and now owns several restaurants: P-Town Pizza and Charlie’s Sweet Shop (named after her dog) and a hotel, The Pioneer Woman Boarding House (a “cowboy luxury” hotel), in downtown Pawhuska; and the Pioneer Woman Mercantile pictured below.
Forget Red Drummond’s fame, the food is delicious. We got a few items to go after our trip to Bluestream Falls, and on our way to the Osage Nation DiscGolf Park.
We arrived at The Mercantile for breakfast, but they have an all-day menu there. You can get your breakfast for dinner, and your dinner for breakfast anytime of the day.
Chris got the Cowboy Breakfast Burrito and I tried a few of the simplest things on their menu: Mac & Cheese and Blistered Green Beans.
The Cowboy Breakfast Burrito was a huge as you could imagine, and incredibly delicious. The Mac & Cheese, okay I don’t know how Ree does it but that was out of this world. Who knew you could pack that much flavor into something so simple. The blistered green beans were also so delicious, I figured I had to get something "healthy” for all of my other bad decisions made on this day, and they really did balance me out.
We also got a few cookies and scones from the bakery. The blueberry scone was unlike anything I ever had before. The icing was delicious and not too-sweet, and the blueberries were plump and juicy.
The texas sheet cake cookie looked so simple but when I bit into it, it was practically the most delicious brownie I ever had with a little bit of frosting. I don’t even like chocolate that much, but this was something else.
I’m sure I stood out like a tourist in my black shorts and tank top, the other customers there were country casual, but I didn’t care because were were headed to the disc golf course, Osage Nation DiscGolf Park!
When we go back, I am going to get the Chicken Pot Pie and Chris is going to get the Chicken Fried Steak! Until then, I am learning more about ranching on their Drummond Ranch YouTube show. I already read Ree Drummond’s book - The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels--a Love Story (it was a fun little read).
THINGS TO DO IN PAWHUSKA, OKLAHOMA
If you are a disc golfer (that is not a beginner) you must play The Lodge at Taylor Ranch
Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is just to the north of Pawhuksa. There are wild buffalo here, and at sunrise or sunset you can listen to the most beautiful melody of singing birds (I have never heard anything like it).
Check out the other restaurants by the Pioneer Woman: P-Town Pizza, Charlie’s Sweet Shop and tour the ranch (where Ree Drummond films her Food Network television show!).
Wool-A-Roc Museum & Wildlife Preserve (near there)
Where to Stay Near PAWHUSKA OKLAHOMA
Taylor Ranch in Pawhuska, Oklahoma is also the home of Oklahoma’s #2 rated disc golf course for the past 16-years (no big deal). They have The Cabin, The Cottage and the “Modern Day Teepee” onsite at the disc golf course, availble to rent on airbnb.
The Boarding House, a “cowboy luxury” hotel by the Pioneer Woman
The Frontier Hotel
BarDrew Valley Inn (a Bed & Breakfast)
They have plenty of other options to choose from in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. But one place that I have personally always wanted to stay at is the Inn at Price Tower. It is located in downtown Bartlesville, Oklahoma and was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the only skyscraper he ever designed.
